Examples of Emotional Triggers

Topics or experiences that create emotional distress or discomfort are known as "emotional triggers."
Emotional triggers 'alert' us - they let us know what is important to us, and which aspects of our lives may be unsatisfying, frustrating or disturbing. Triggers let us know which areas of our mind or body require nurturing, attuning, and healing.

It can help inform us what is happening in our bodies - what sensations we feel with the emotions. Triggers will vary depending on the individual, because everyone has different life experiences and struggles with different issues.

Here are a few examples how a person may feel when traumatic events or situations cause distress.

  • I felt alone.
  • I felt blamed.
  • I felt insecure.
  • I felt excluded.
  • I felt criticized.
  • I felt frustrated.
  • I felt defenseless.
  • I felt I couldn't be honest.
  • I felt I couldn't use my voice.
  • I felt lack of affection.
